President's Corner

I’m very happy to announce that Patrick Hailey is now officially on the Swami’s Board of Directors. Great to have you part of the team Patrick! For those who know him, you know. For those who don’t, he’s a different style of rider than many of us in the club. He’s completed numerous double centuries, won his age group in the 24 Hour World Time Trial Championships and hence has a wealth of knowledge about distance rides and the nutrition that goes along with them. Join us for Club Night or Hoppy Hour, a ride he’s normally on, and say hello. Good luck keeping up with him though!

4/7 Social Ride

On Sunday, April 7, we're hosting our monthly Swami's Social Ride. It’s a conversationally-paced ride where you can meet long-time as well as new Swami’s members. You can check out all of the details here. A reminder: we now start and finish the Social Rides at Bird Rock Coffee Roasters in Bressi Ranch (map). Wear a Swami's kit from any year to get a coffee and baked good on Swami’s!

4/13 Kitchen Creek Ride

On Saturday, April 13, we’re heading back to the beautiful and challenging Kitchen Creek ride! Starting in Pine Valley, we’ll begin with a 10-mile warmup before tackling the main attraction: a climb of 11 miles with no automobile traffic! After that, you have three road options. There will be routes for all interests: a starter 34-mile loop of Kitchen Creek only, a 59-mile excursion that adds Lake Cuyamaca, and the whole enchilada 75 mile route with 7000+ feet of climbing. See our website for all the details!

4/16 Spring Club Night!

On Tuesday, April 16 from 6:00 to 8:30 pm, join us at Cadence Cyclery (map) for our Spring 2024 Club Night! As always, there will be brand experts, cycling insights, great food from Moto Deli, beer from Rouleur, and discounts on just about every type of bicycle-related item you can buy. The discounts will be available until

COLNAGO-C68-HRWH

the end of business on Tuesday, April 23, so if you absolutely have to miss the party, you still have a week to use the discounts.

New for this Club Night: cycling coach Maddison Russel will discuss his approach and services for Swami’s members (see below for more on him), and you’ll also be

COLNAGO-C68-HRWH

able to marvel at the gorgeous Colnago models in Cadence’s newest product line, including the C68 V4RS, Tadej Pogačar’s wheels of choice.

For the latest on Club Night activities and deals see our website. Remember, Club Night is for current Swami’s members - to become one, just sign up here!

Swami’s Performance Coaching

We got a great response from those of you who let us know you’re interested in performance coaching through Swami’s! We’d like to introduce CTS Pro Coach Maddison Russel. He has been a professional endurance sports coach with Carmichael Training Systems for 7 years and an endurance athlete for over 17 years. He studied at Indiana University, where he graduated with a Bachelor's in Kinesiology, majoring in Exercise Science and minoring in Coaching and Psychology.

Maddison creates focused, individualized training plans that make the best use of his clients’ available time. His coaching philosophy emphasizes energy system development with a time at intensity model, utilizing field testing and a six-zone model to periodize training. He specializes in event-specific preparation including nutrition and hydration planning, logistics, and tactics. He is also a competitive athlete who enjoys racing road and gravel events.

Maddison will be at Club Night, giving an overview of his coaching and would love to answer your questions!

Summer Kit Order is Extended!

Because April is such a good month for granting extensions, we’ve decided to extend the spring kit ordering window to midnight, Tuesday, April 2. There are many options in both the new summer styles and the standard 2024 kit, but do it now - this is your last chance to buy this year’s kit!

UCSD Cycling Team

The Swami’s-sponsored UCSD Cycling team kept busy in March, showing up to the UCLA and USC race weekends, achieving many podium results: Elisa Luo, Dennis Liang, and Dominic Orlando took first place in their respective categories. The team’s results were capped off by Dominic and Elisa winning the Omnium Classification for Collegiate Men’s A/B and Collegiate Women B/C respectively. Dominic finished first in the time trial and the Grand Prix and 4th in the Road Race. Elisa won the time trial, Road Race, and Grand Prix.

Furthermore, the women’s team swept the podium, with Grace and Paris coming 2nd and 3rd in the Omnium Classification for Collegiate Women B/C. Holly also finished 2nd in the Time Trial.

In other exciting news, UCSD Cycling will be hosting their criterium, the Triton Crit, at the Huennekens criterium course in Sorrento Valley on May 19. The race will have open and collegiate categories, reviving the long-lost Huennekens Criterium!
