December 2022

Although the days are shorter and cooler, Swami's still has plenty going on! This month, make sure you're up to date on the renewed weekly Swami's World Famous ride, register for our introductory track clinic at the San Diego Velodrome, read about the accomplishments of one of our superhuman Swamis, and more! Only a few weeks until the days start getting longer again - see you on the road!

Swami’s Holiday Party

We're looking forward to seeing many of you at the Swami's Holiday Party on Sunday. We have a full house with a waitlist, so if you’ve reserved a spot and your plans have changed, please send an email to tatiana@swamis.org so that we can offer the spot to someone on the waiting list. We wish we could accommodate all Swami’s members who want to attend, and next time around, we’ll aim to do just that!

End-of-Year Ride Changes

With Christmas Day and New Year’s Day both falling on Sundays this year, Santa told us we needed to give your cycling widows and widowers a holiday and cancel those rides. The Social Ride will take place a week later than usual, on the second week in January. To recap:

Sunday 12/25, Christmas Day: No LSD ride
Sunday 1/1, New Year’s Day: No Swami’s Social ride
Sunday 1/8: Rescheduled Swami’s Social Ride

The Flying Swami

Swami Patrick Hailey rode 469.2 miles in 24 hours to dominate the 20 - 29 age group category, take 5th place overall and 3rd in the men’s solo category at the 6-12-24 Hour World Time Trial Championships in Borrego Springs on November 4. He averaged 19.6 mph

over the 24 hours to beat his nearest age group challenger by over 40 miles! Part of the secret to his success, other than his boundless enthusiasm and raw power, is his meticulous approach to nutrition, which allowed him to consume 15,000 calories over that time, almost matching the 16,000 calories he expended! We congratulate Patrick on this amazing achievement and can’t wait to see what he’ll do next!

Return of the Weekly World Famous Ride

The Swami’s A and B World Famous Saturday rides now have a new start and end point: Bird Rock Coffee Roasters in Encinitas, located in the Lumberyard on the 101 (map). Bird Rock will have coffee and bananas before the ride.

The A ride will depart at 8:10, the B ride at 8:14 sharp. More information is at https://swamis.org/return-of-the-swamis-world-famous-ride-on-nov-19th/

The varying route B / C / D rides will continue to leave as advertised on Facebook and Swami’s site, from Revolution.

12/4 Social Ride

On Sunday, December 4, we're hosting our monthly Swami's Social Ride, a conversationally-paced ride where you can meet long-time as well as new Swamis. The ride starts in the parking lot behind Peet’s Coffee in Bressi Ranch (map). Wear a Swami's kit from any year to get a free pastry and coffee or drink of your choice. You can check out all of the details here. A reminder: we now finish the Social Rides at Bird Rock Coffee Roasters in Bressi Ranch (map), just up the street from Peet’s.

12/11 Swami’s Gravel Ride

On Sunday, December 11, gravelers will meet at Lofty Coffee La Costa at 8:00 am for our monthly Swami’s gravel ride. Look for details on our website as the date approaches. We will regroup at a few points, but please download the route in advance. We finish up at Lofty for coffee.

1/8 Swami’s Velodrome Clinic: Try the Track!

Have you thought about learning track cycling but didn’t know how to get started? We are partnering with the San Diego Velodrome to host an introductory track clinic for Swami’s members at the velodrome (map) on Sunday, January 8, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. This 3 hour session will introduce the basics of riding on a banked track with a fixed gear bike.

Loaner track bikes will be provided, and no previous experience is necessary. The cost is $20 per rider.

Registration and further instructions are available at this link. There is a maximum of 16, so reserve your spot and find out for yourself how track cyclists slow down a bicycle with no brakes (it’s easier than it sounds)! UCSD Cycling Team News

Swami’s is a proud sponsor of the UCSD Cycling Team and we’re glad to report on their racing and training activities. The team recently held a training weekend in the Julian/Anza Borrego Desert area, camping at the Lake Cuyamaca campground. They huddled together for many servings of steamy pasta in the frigid desert evenings. On the first day, many road riders ambitiously attempted a century that demanded over 8,000 ft of elevation. Most completed it; some ran out of the previous night’s pasta fuel. The MTB team explored a long route

through the Noble Canyon Trail that featured many fun and technical segments. On the second day, the road riders took it easier, exploring the scenery and windy roads toward Major’s Diner to fill up on a widely-welcomed brunch. In all, this year’s team camp certainly helped continue to build the team’s endurance with many base miles, was an exploration into the beautiful landscape of Julian by bike, and continued to bring the team closer together.
