From our President

With the Poker Ride in the books, I can't help thinking, did everyone else that participated have as much fun, while being properly challenged, both physically and mentally, as I did? I, for one, had an awesome time. That being said, we couldn’t have done it without our many volunteers, both within Swami's family and without.

So thanks to Rouleur for beer and Zane and Joanie for Rubio's post ride treats. Thanks to Peter, Brian and Sean for hosting the Wolfpack stop. Thanks to Ryan and Levi for hosting the Eliel stop. Thanks to our Swami's volunteers, Laura, Alan, Alyssa and Bryan for hosting stops 3 and 4. Finally, thanks to the whole extended events committee for all the planning, setup and execution. Susan, Mary, Tatiana and Scott, with a special shoutout to Natalie as our MC and Eric for being the head umpire.

Looking forward to seeing you all on the Independence weekend rides and the upcoming TdF ride!

Full House at the Poker Ride

After a five-year hiatus, the Swami's Poker Ride came roaring back, with 15 teams dashing, navigating, and improvising their way all over North County. Volunteers at each card station made teams work for their cards, doing push-ups, riding obstacle courses, eating donuts, singing karaoke, and other fun activities.

With creative team names, matching kits, accouterments and serious poker faces, our teams were ready to ride road and gravel to finish this challenging course. Our sponsors, Eliel and Rouleur, were there to add fun and beer, and Rubios provided a delicious spread for the hungry riders.

And the winners are:

7/2 Rouleur Rides of Independence

On Saturday, July 2, the Swamis ride will join the Rides of Independence, leaving from Rouleur Brewing in Carlsbad at 9:00 am. There will be two routes: the road route is an old favorite going through Fallbrook and Bonsall, and the gravel route turns south, visiting Lake Hodges and environs.

After the rides, the party continues at Rouleur, with $5 pints all day long! See the Rouleur Facebook page for more information.

Note: due to the Rouleur ride, there will not be a ride from Revolution.

7/3 July Java Ride

On Sunday, July 3 we're hosting our monthly Swami's Java Ride, a conversationally-paced social ride where you can meet long-time as well as new Swamis. The ride starts and ends at Peet's Coffee in Bressi Ranch. Wear a Swami's kit from any year for a free pastry and coffee or drink of your choice after the ride. You can check out all of the details here.

7/4 The Stars of Many Stripes All-Club Ride

hosted by Velotown

On Monday, July 4, we will be helping Velotown celebrate Independence Day and Velotown's one year anniversary with a Fourth of July ride and party! The ride is for all local clubs to enjoy and will include a festive-fifty together, with free beer after and free coffee before as well as snacks and other food specials!

The ride starts at 8:00 am, departing from and returning to Velotown USA. View and download the route at https://www.strava.com/routes/2977235162749569790.

7/10 Swami’s Gravel Ride

Last month’s kickoff gravel ride had a great turnout, proving beyond doubt that Swami’s riders want gravel. So we will continue the new tradition on Sunday, July 10. Gravelers will meet at Lofty Coffee La Costa at 8:00 am. Look for details on our website as the date approaches. We will regroup at a few points, but please download the route in advance. We finish up at Lofty for coffee.

7/16 Tour de France Ride and Viewing Party @ Rouleur

The Tour de France is underway, and it’s the perfect excuse to get together with fellow cyclists and enjoy our favorite sport! On Saturday, July 16, we’ll kick off the day at Rouleur with a morning ride and return to lunch and beer while we watch Stage 14 – or not… because some of us just like to party! We have two rides to choose from, and the start times are staggered so we all get back

Tour_de_France

to Rouleur around the same time. Lunch will be provided and the first beer is included in registration, and of course, will be provided by Rouleur!

PARTY

Registration and waiver are required for ride and party attendees. Food and beer tickets will be available at the check-in table, starting at 7:30 AM and then again after the ride, starting at 11:30 AM. Tickets are good for lunch and 1 beer.

COST

  •  Food and beer is FREE to current Swami’s members.
  •  Food and beer is $20 for non-members.
  •  Food and drink tickets will be available for purchase for non-riders, so have the main squeeze and kids join us after your ride! There is no charge for non-members participating in just the ride but we ask for the waiver to be filled out.

PRE-RIDE

Rouleur’s restrooms will be open before the ride starting at 7:30.

PRIZES

We have a raffle, prizes based on Strava segments (to be announced at the start), PLUS a grand prize for the winner of the TdF stage winner prediction. A little friendly competition makes everything more fun! Must be present to win!!

Calling all C Riders!

It’s summertime, and that means it’s the best time of the year to get to the Tuesday and Thursday 6:33 am Gene Kelley C ride. If you’re a C rider who’s been hesitant because of the recent small C group size, worry no more - you will now have plenty of company. So stop hitting that snooze button and get on down to the Tuesday and Thursday Gene Kelley rides. You don’t need arm warmers, you don’t need a light, and you won’t need to deal with the FOMO!

Base “Pass”

A friendly heads up to all Swami’s riders that Camp Pendleton will be completely closed to bicycle traffic from July 9 to July 22. See https://www.pendleton.marines.mil/Road-Gate-Status for up to date information on base access for cyclists. Look for some fun alternatives to the San Clemente Long Steady Distance (LSD) ride on the calendar this month.
