Step 7

"Humbly asked HIM to remove our shortcomings."

What is humility?  What can it mean to us?  The avenue to true freedom of the human spirit.  Necessary aid to survival.  Value of ego-puncturing.  Failure and misery transformed by humility.  Strength from weakness.  Pain is the admission price to new life.  Self-centered fear chief activator of defects.  Step Seven is change in attitude which permits us to move out of ourselves toward God.

Tradition 7

"Every A.A. group ought to be fully self-supporting, declining outside contributions."

No A.A. Tradition had the labor pains this one did.  Collective poverty initially a matter of necessity.  Fear of exploitation.  Necessity of separating the spiritual from the material.  Decision to subsist on A.A. voluntary contributions only.  Placing the responsibility of supporting A.A. headquarters directly upon A.A. members.  Bare running expenses plus a prudent reserve is headquarters policy.

Concept 7

The Conference recognizes that the Charter and Bylaws of the General Service Board are legal instruments: that the Trustees are thereby fully empowered to manage and conduct all of the world service affairs of Alcoholics Anonymous.  It is further understood that the Conference Charter itself is not a legal document: that is relies instead upon the force of tradition and the power of the A.A. purse for its final effectiveness.

Both Feet on the Ground

When Bill W. started thinking about promoting himself as the leader of Alcoholics Anonymous, Dr. Bob stated "keep both feet on the ground".   This principal applies to each and every one of us today as we work to keep our ego in check and remain a humble, teachable citizen during these unprecedented times.

How does one obtain humility?  We proceed to break down the ego with Step 5 - "admitted to God, to ourselves and another human being the exact nature of our wrongs".  It’s a humbling practice to be truly open and honest with another human being.  It is the practice of identifying and taking a deep look at our personal shortcomings.  We slide into Step 6 – “were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character” which brings us to Step 7...

In a year of firsts for Alcoholics Anonymous, another first is here -- virtual International Convention experience.

“Though the 'in-person' experience cannot take place for this Convention,” says Racy J., staff member on G.S.O.'s Public Information desk, “this virtual platform will allow us to celebrate A.A.’s message of hope and recovery with potentially millions of alcoholics from whom we are physically distanced, but can at least be digitally connected.”

A-B-C's of Meeting Topics

Over the years, many of us have attended or chaired hundreds of AA discussion meetings. Good sponsors teach us that, if we are to be a Chairperson, we should prepare a topic for the meeting.

Thoughtful preparation of a topic shows respect for the meeting attendees, and also shows that the Chairperson has thought very carefully about how the topic relates to his or her recovery. In the words of a wise AA, “you can’t give something away you ain’t got”.

  • A.  Acceptance, Amends, Anonymity, Anger
  • B.  Behavior, Belonging, Blackouts
  • C.  Conscience, Complacency, Complex
  • D.  Desire, Decisions, Depression
  • E.  Easy-Does-It, Emotions, Ego
  • F.  Faith, Fear, Fellowship, Fatigue
  • G.  Gratitude, God, Gossip
  • H.  Humility, Hope, Honesty, Happiness

In-Person Meeting Directory

Need a Live Meeting?

We are aware that some businesses and facilities have now been allowed to reopen, contingent upon their readiness to implement certain restrictions. The decision to reinstate in-person meetings, however, falls solely on each individual AA group.

If your group has re-opened to a physical meeting, or plans to become a hybrid physical meeting and ZOOM, we need to be notified to update the online directories.  Below is the information we need for your physical meeting to be added to the website:

  • Day of Meeting
  • Time of Meeting
  • City of Meeting
  • Meeting Name
  • Type of Meeting:  Physical, Zoom or Hybrid
  • Address of Meeting
  • Notes:  Contact info, must wear masks, bring your own chair, etc.
We will take this information over the phone, in person or via email.  Let us know how we can help.

NOCCO, COVID-19 and Our Seventh Tradition

Even though meetings, 12-step services and operations have shifted to a virtual environment, expenses continue to accumulate during this crisis, which underscores the importance of practicing the Seventh Tradition. We still stock literature, handle 12-step calls around the clock, and assist those with a desire to stop drinking. Your generous support is critical and appreciated.

7th Tradition FAQ's

The General Service Office in New York has put out a list of frequently asked questions on this new way of practicing the 7th tradition at virtual meetings.  This is worthy of a quick read and can help guide the conversations in your groups.
