The Lion's Roar

Amos 3:8
"The lion has roared; who will not fear?
The Lord GOD has spoken; who can but prophesy?”

Nevertheless, I tell you the truth; it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. (John 16:7)

Paraklētos

Parakletos is a complicated word. There are some Greek words that just do not have an easy English translation.  Parakletos can mean helper, comforter, intercessor, counselor, advisor, and advocate.  It was a word that was used in the secular world to identify someone who was called to one’s side, frequently in a legal context. So, it is interesting to note that Jesus uses this word to describe the Holy Spirit.

Pentecost is the feast day of the Church that comes 50 days after Easter that celebrates the coming of the Holy Spirit.  You can always find Pentecost by counting 7 weeks and one day from Easter. Seven weeks represents a week of Easters and one more day is the 8th day.  The 8th day is the beginning of the new creation.  Once the Holy Spirit came on the 8th day, we began our new life as children of the Kingdom of God who have been marked by the waters of baptism as a royal priesthood belonging to God. As we begin our new life, we are given the Holy Spirit to stand along side of us. Jesus promises in the Gospel according to John in chapter 14 that He will not leave us as orphans in this world. As He ascended into Heaven, He sent the Holy Spirit to be with us, and in us.

The Holy Spirit is our Parakletos. He stands alongside us so that we are never alone.  He advocates for us, guides us, comforts us, and encourages us. He does everything that we need Him to do, even praying for us as Paul tells us in Romans 8:26

“Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.” This is why we can be completely confident. We stand on the Word of God as baptized children of God and the Holy Spirit stands with us. We are never alone.

Trinity Banners

Thank you to Cindy Meier and Jenny Swensen for their work with Trinity’s banners.  They have mounted banners in the sanctuary for the various festivals this school year.  The banner closet has been cleaned and straightened, and plans are underway for improvements in banner storage and identification.

Jenny donated two banners to Trinity, which are pictured: Confirmation and “Day by Day.”  She also identified a new banner for Ascension for Trinity to purchase; unfortunately, it did not arrive in time this year but will be used for upcoming celebrations.

If you would like to assist Cindy and Jenny with caring for banners or be involved with making new ones, please contact Mary Stahlke at 708-552-1271 or mary@trinityvp.com
