Even beyond these points, time in nature is considered so healing that doctors will prescribe it. The studied benefits include better sleep and reduction in stress, including reductions in blood pressure, excess weight and risk of disease. People suffering from post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD), or who are living at a high level in the window of tolerance (described in March’s newsletter) in particular can benefit from spending time out in nature - which our ranch provides in abundance. Psychologists have noted that spending time out of doors also reduces depression and significantly boosts feelings of well-being. Our residents get to choose from a range of outdoor activities. As an example of a recent Monday, we took the residents swimming. One of the residents had never gone swimming before, and we were able to teach her the basics. On a prior Monday, we went horseback riding. Two of the residents had been afraid to ride, but on that day they bravely got on their horses and joined us for the ride. I pray that you will set aside time each week to be outside and worship the Lord’s creation. |
