Shadowing a TED presentation We’ve written about TED presentations before as a useful resource to help you practice listening skills. Here is an algorithm on how to work on a TED presentation to get the most from it. - Watch the video without any subtitles first to develop listening for gist.
- Watch again with English subtitles. Write out new words and constructions. Look them up in dictionaries.
- Watch the video again paying special attention to extracts with unknown words and structures.
- If there are still some unclear phrases, switch on Russian subtitles and check against them.
- Make a break! It’s important to let the information sink in.
- Revise new words and constructions. Make up phrases and sentences with them.
After you have thoroughly worked on the text, do the shadowing: listen to the text while it is playing and repeat with minimum delay. The aim of the task is to read along in time with the speaker. It is also important to copy the speaker’s intonation, pauses and pronunciation as close as possible. TASK Choose a TED talk and make a video or audio recording of you shadowing the speaker. Post the recording here and share your impressions. |
