Event Programme

✦ 9.30 β€” 10.00 Registration

✦ 10.00 β€” 12.00 Session 1. Understanding and teaching IELTS essays

It’s no surprise that both for students and teachers, IELTS essays are quite a challenge. Being timed under exam conditions, such a productive skill task requires from students not only a lot of concentration and knowledge of the English language, but also a clear understanding of what to write about and how to put ideas together effectively.

It is teachers who must help students understand these aspects of IELTS essays and know how to organise the process of writing as well as provide the necessary assistance so that students improve their writing skills.

Key takeaways

By the end of the first session, participants will be better aware of:

  • the requirements for writing IELTS essays

  • different types of IELTS essays and how to write them

  • the steps of the essay writing process and the required support for students

✦ 12.00 β€” 12.30 Coffee break

✦ 12.30 β€” 14.30 Session 2. Assessing IELTS essays and giving supportive feedback

An effective IELTS teacher is the one who understands the process of marking essays and can guide students to write more effectively. This is especially important when students are aimed at higher levels, such as 6.5+.

The teacher instruments to make it happen include awareness of the assessment criteria and how they are applied to each specific piece of student writing as well as providing encouraging feedback that shows students what they are good at, what needs to be improved and pushes them to get a higher result without feeling disheartened.

Key takeaways

By the end of the second session, participants will be better aware of:

  • how to write essays at band 6.5+

  • the assessment criteria and practice assessing student writing

  • how to encourage students to improve through giving supportive feedback

✦ 14.30 β€” Awarding Certificates
