Hey, Grade Teachers! 

Whether you teach English in primary, secondary, high school, public or private school, online or offline, burnout can happen to anyone. This is a gradual process, and if you know its signs and how to prevent it, you can safely go through the whole school year. And then the holiday will not turn into treatment, but will bring you pleasure.

Have you ever felt that you are going with the flow, doing meaningless lessons, unable to find inspiration, having difficulty coping with your workload, having difficulty finding common ground with your students, generally feeling that you hate everything and everyone or want to cry? Even if at least one of the mentioned things is about you, it may be a sign that you are suffering from burnout.

Where does burnout come from? There are many factors, but the most common are:

  • health problems; 
  • issues at home; 
  • bad classroom management;
  • lack or unavailability of good teaching resources and materials;
  • heavy work schedule and lack of time for effective planning;
  • pressure from above and lack of support from school management; 
  • you take work home with you (for example, check students’ writings);
  • boredom.

We have good news: it is better to prevent burnout than to overcome it. And summer is a perfect time to think about how to do it.

Take time for yourself

You can't work well if you don't have enough energy. Think about how you rest, what you eat, whether you switch from work when you come home, or get enough sleep. Make a schedule for yourself, where there will be a place for a good sleep, healthy food, a favourite pastime or meetings with friends, time with loved ones, travel and a deserved weekend. And most importantly - follow it! In a month - it will become your good habit.

Be the change you want to see

Maybe it's a cliché. However, if you are upset about what is happening inside the staff room or school walls, learn to ignore the negative environment and focus on having a positive experience in your classroom and making it a better place for your students.

Overcome anxiety

When you believe in your pedagogical abilities, students will perceive you accordingly. Again, talk to others - colleagues, friends, senior management - listen to their experiences and advice and try them out.

Work on your teaching skills

Burnout often occurs when we do not have the tools to teach at a certain level. Stay up to date with the latest news, courses, seminars, and hone your skills. This will make you more confident. For example, if you work with teens, take the CELT-S course. CELT-P will come in handy if you work with young learners. If you want to refresh your knowledge of teaching methodology and learn the basics of communicative method, the secrets of successful lesson planning, take one of TKT Online Preparation courses. Be open to change and improvement. When you are confident and flexible to change, it is impossible to feel demotivated and negative.
