Hey, Grade Teachers!

Flaming June has come to an end. Most of us are already on vacation, but there are those who work in camps or language schools in summer. Of course, it’s time to rest, but, admit it, being a teacher is already a lifestyle, and even during a well-deserved vacation, we can not help but think about our favourite jobs and our dearest students. And now is the time to look at everything from different perspectives, allow ourselves to regain strength and prepare for the new school year and new challenges. So what shall we do this summer?

Let’s reflect on the past school year

Reflection is a process of self-observation and self-evaluation.

It is important in our work, because that's when we can see what and why we do, and whether it works or not. Reflection inevitably leads to changes and improvements in teaching practice. And reflection is a professional development that is already happening in our classrooms, real or virtual.

Reflection can be done when a problem arises, or simply to learn more about one's own teaching. You can focus on a specific group of students, or a specific lesson, or on a specific aspect of your teaching, such as how to encourage students to speak more English in the classroom.

Here are examples of questions you can ask yourself about your school year. Some of them can also be good questions to discuss with colleagues:

20 end of year questions for teachers

Once you have asked yourself these or other questions, you need to do the following:

  • think about the reasons why something went wrong, or vice versa worked, as well as how you can fix the situation in the upcoming school year;
  • talk to a colleague or mentor, or someone you trust, about what you think, and you may come up with ideas on how to work differently;
  • read about what worries you or what you want to change. There are many resources for teachers on the Internet with ideas and articles on a variety of topics;
  • ask – it's a great way to learn from colleagues how they solved a problem – in online communities, on websites or, perhaps, during master classes for teachers.

Reflection is a cyclical process, because as soon as you start implementing certain changes, you will evaluate and reflect on them again.

If you believe that one of the reasons something went wrong was the burnout, read our blog post to learn more about the ways to prevent it, or wait for our next newsletter, while reflecting on the past school year.
