Greetings to everyone!

Have you ever thought what is happening in your mouth while you are speaking English? Have you ever helped your students to explore the territory of the mouth? Sure, there is a phonemic chart in every classroom. However, describing and talking about samba won’t get you to samba! If you want to know how to teach pronunciation, not about pronunciation, our today’s newsletter is for you!

From Phonemes to Poetry: How pronunciation brings language alive! is a one-day course for teachers by Adrian Underhill, the author of pronunciation chart, a teacher and trainer, ELT consultant, known among the TEFL professionals as ‘Pronunciation Guru’ and not only.

Adrian is an outstanding jazzman as well. He says, “I cannot separate jazz improv from my development as a teacher. In the 1980s I was getting into jazz, which is complex, creative, rule based, yet improvisational – just like language. I did not read music, so my inspiration and learning came from studying phrases and passages from great jazz players through intensive listening to their recordings, using a certain technique, the way most jazz musicians learn. Once I had done this ‘double’ to myself through studying improvisation, I began to find that I could do the same thing with my students learning English.”

If you would like to learn about ‘a confidence enhancing conjuring trick’ that helps learners attain a much higher quality of connected speech pronunciation, than they thought possible, or than conventional methods expect, this training session is for you.

Adrian Underhill believes that all the sounds are needed from the very first lesson, therefore you need an approach which acknowledges this and exploits this by allowing you to focus on any sound, moving fluidly and purposefully between them. Moreover, all the sounds are interconnected. They all shape and define each other, so that work on one sound benefits other (neighbouring) sounds too.

If you want to learn about and take an all-at-once holistic approach that requires a different way of thinking and allows you to recognize and work on what needs doing rather than following a set menu, you should enroll as well.

If you want to know how to teach phonemic symbols without causing confusions and help the learners discover the sounds, this workshop is for you.

What will you learn?

  • You will develop your own pronunciation at the level of sounds, words and connected speech.

  • You will learn to feel and sense what you are doing in your mouth so that you can tweak your pronunciation as much as you wish, and help your learners to do the same.

  • You will develop your performance skills to bring about listener engagement and enjoyment through your use of stress, intonation, voice tone, pause, body language, and ...feeling!

  • You will see how to use the chart, and how to help learners to speak from the heart, using the connected speech of poetry.

What will you get?

  • 6 hours of intensive practical work, teaching techniques and feedback;

  • a certificate.
