3 Rules You Thought You Knew + Electronic Whistle

Electronic Whistle

Due to current Massachusetts State Limitations on Ice Hockey During Massachusetts Phase 3, Step 1, officials are REQUIRED to wear a mask on the ice and use electronic whistles during games.

We have previously worked with Mass Hockey (https://mahockey.org) to secure 2,000 electronic whistles which were then sold out within days. Because they sold out so quickly, we would like to gauge interest before placing an additional order. Please note that we would secure the whistles and make them available for you to purchase at approximately $23 per whistle. They would be available in 10 days. Only reply if you would like to be on the list to pre-order one or two.. We will then send a link out to pay if we have a good response. This is the last call for electronic whistles.

Minor Penalties

Are there any instances in which a bench minor penalty does not have to be served by a player on the ice at the time of the infraction?

No. Rule References 402(b).

Bench minor penalties must be served by a non-penalized player who was on the ice at the time of the infraction.
In those rare occasions when a bench minor penalty is assessed and there are no players on the ice (e.g. before the start of the game, during intermissions, during a penalty shot, etc.), the team may designate any non-penalized player, except a goalkeeper, to serve the bench minor penalty.

601 - Abuse of officials

What is the proper sequence of penalties to be assessed to a player who continues to verbally abuse an Official or who persists in disputing a call?

Minor, misconduct, game misconduct, warning to the Captain, bench minor penalty. Rule References 601(a.1, c.1 and e.1) and 633(a).

This sequence must be followed in every instance as the rules are clear that a match penalty is not an option in this situation. Once the Abuse of Officials progression has been exercised, the proper sequence is shifted to Refusing to Start Play.

616 - Fouled from Behind

With the opposing goalkeeper on the ice, a player in his Attacking Zone has a breakaway and is fouled from behind. He gets up and takes an unimpeded shot on the goal. Should a penalty shot be awarded?

No. Rule Reference 616(a).

The player, once he regains possession and control of the puck, has not been denied a reasonable scoring opportunity. A minor penalty is the correct call in this situation.
