Throughout the year, BGI empowered innovators, educators, and changemakers through accelerator programs, open calls, educational initiatives, and ecosystem events across sustainability, food systems, and innovation.

We engaged startups, teachers, and partners through initiatives like FoodEducators, webinars such as “Nutrir para Viver” with 70+ educators, and programs supporting early-stage ventures with mentoring, funding opportunities, and global connections.

We remain committed to building a global community, fostering collaboration, and helping innovators turn bold ideas into sustainable solutions with real-world impact.

As we step into the new year, we’re excited about the possibilities ahead.

Wishing you and your loved ones a holiday season filled with warmth, inspiration, and meaningful moments. ✨

End-of-Year 2025 Message from our CEO, Gonçalo Amorim

As we reach the end of 2025, it is clear that we continue to navigate a world shaped by complexity and rapid transformation. Global uncertainty remains a defining feature of our time — from geopolitical instability and social pressures to the accelerating impacts of climate change on ecosystems, food systems, and communities. These realities challenge us, but they also reinforce the urgency of BGI’s mission and purposeful action.

At BGI, 2025 was a year of growth, acceleration, and collaboration. We strengthened our
role as an innovation enabler, working closely with startups, corporates, researchers, and
public institutions to turn knowledge into impact. Increasingly, our work converges around
a clear focus: the application of biotechnology to enable nutrient efficiency, recovery and
recycling across the entire food value chain — from primary production to processing,
urban systems and environmental restoration.

Across our programmes and initiatives, we supported solutions that advance sustainable
and regenerative food systems, including regenerative agriculture and soil health,
regenerative aquaculture and blue economy models, Controlled Environment Agriculture
(CEA), and smart cities and mobility. These domains are connected by a common systems
logic: reducing losses, closing nutrient loops and transforming biological flows into long-
term value.

Our work at Ampliaqua exemplifies this positioning. As a research and innovation platform,
Ampliaqua integrates regenerative aquaculture, IMTA-based nutrient recovery, bioponic
CEA production and microbial processes to demonstrate how nutrients can be intelligently
captured, transformed and redeployed across interconnected food and urban systems. This
approach reflects BGI’s growing expertise in designing and validating circular,
biotechnology-enabled solutions with real-world applicability.

Our engagement in European initiatives and Horizon, Eureka, and EIT-supported
programmes once again demonstrated the power of collaboration. Projects such as
LILAS4SOILS, EWA, GROW, Tech4RegenAg, our Blue Economy, Agrifood, CEA and Smart
Cities-related acceleration initiatives, and the recently launched AquaMicrobiomeDB reflect
a shared commitment to resilience and sustainability — and to the strategic importance of
nutrient circularity in achieving them.

As we look ahead, our direction is clear:

To build on what we have achieved, learning from experience and scaling what works

To work together, across sectors and borders, to effectively address systemic challenges

To invest in the future by empowering people, ideas, and AI-based innovations that unlock circular nutrient systems and regenerate our planet

Together, we can regenerate not only the way we live, produce, move and consume, but also
restore trust in food systems that are efficient, resilient and aligned with planetary
boundaries.

With gratitude and optimism,

Gonçalo Amorim
