State Rep. Salazar receives bilingual-ed award

The New Mexico Association for Bilingual Education has awarded State Representative Tomás Salazar, representing House District 70, the Matías L. Chacón Award for his legislative leadership in the area of bilingual education.

Since joining the legislature in 2013, Representative Salazar has sponsored numerous pieces of legislation to improve and expand upon programs that support New Mexico’s distinctly diverse student population.

Beginning with the English Language Learner Teacher Preparation Act of 2014, Representative Salazar has collaborated with numerous education experts and community advocates to strengthen support for bilingual educators and their students.

Edward Tabet-Cubero, executive director of the Learning Alliance, stated, “Representative Salazar is a true public servant, as he has been the key legislator to offer bilingual educators access to the legislative process in order to better serve our children.”

Our alumni board is busy planning an exciting Homecoming for you, packed with fun activities, lots of opportunities to connect with classmates and friends, and memories to be made.

Would you or your business consider sponsoring our Cowboy 5K Gallop & Trot, September 21? For a monetary donation, or a donation of merchandise for prizes, we’ll proudly print your name on the official 2019 race shirts as a sponsor!

Also, a donation of an item to our silent auction taking place on September 20 will get your name listed on our shirt as proud supporter of Highlands.

Please contact the Alumni Office by July 31, 2019 to ensure your name appears on the official 2019 Cowboy 5K Gallop & Trot race shirt by our printing deadline.

NMHU Career Services is focusing on better preparing our students for job interviews and professionalism.

With the high cost of college expenses, most students cannot afford a professional outfit to wear to an interview or potential job, so we are starting a Career Clothing Closet to provide a professional outfit to students, at no charge to them. We can only meet these goals with the help of community members like yourself.

We are seeking donations of pre-used clothing items that students can use to accomplish a better impression at their interview or job.

Your contributions are greatly appreciated! We can only hope that you will support our mission and help us implement our program and initiatives.

You can drop off your contributions to NMHU Career Services in the Felix Martinez Building, Suite 230, by mail to Box 9000 Las Vegas, NM 87701 or call (505)454-3048 for pick-up.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at (505)454-3048 or through email jehooper@nmhu.edu.
