90 Years Anniversary Video for this Month: Interview with Carlos Mendez, Mexico; Vice President IABSE, Click Here! |
|
In this interview, IABSE Vice President, Carlos Mendez tells us how IABSE helped him early in his career until now. Currently, he is the driving force behind the growth of IABSE in the Latin American region. From the reactivation of the Colombian National Group to urging members in Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Argentina to form their own National Group. After all, it only requires 6 members in the same country to create a National Group. His enthusiasm in spreading IABSE’s mission across Latin America is infectious and should be followed suit by other members. Last month, the 2nd Mid-Year IABSE event: The 2nd Bridge Engineering Workshop, Mexico. With invited international guest speakers, the Workshop attracted participants from several Latin American countries and was a great success. Such events bring global knowledge and experience to the local engineers which is one of the great benefits of being part of the association. In this video, C. Mendez also emphasizes the importance of involving young engineers in future IABSE’s activities. Watch this video and share his enthusiasm! Watch his interview!

Basic Theory and Design of Hybrid Structures 2019 – New E-Book Hybrid structures are structurally rational and accepted worldwide. They use more than two different types of materials so that they compensate the weak points each other and utilizes the strong points. New materials such as chemical fibers and polymer have also been developed and used for hybrid structures due to its light weight and high corrosion resistance. There exist specifications and guidelines for hybrid structures in Japan (JSCE), Europe (Eurocode), USA (AASHTO) and so on. However, it is not easy for students and young engineers to understand these codes and the design and construction methods of hybrid structures because they require deep knowledge of materials, connection details, structural behaviors, design and construction methods, and so on. The Hybrid Committee, JSCE, published “Basic theory and Design of Hybrid Structures” in 2011 to help them understand the basic concepts, theories and design methods of hybrid structures. This book has been widely accepted as an introductory educational material by young engineers and students in Japan. This book was translated to English by S. Nakamura (Vice President of IABSE) and five experts as part of the Japan Society of Civil Engineers (Collective Member of IABSE) activity. This English version would help students and young engineers in the world who need good an introductory book to understand the basics of hybrid structures. This book presents many hybrid structures developed in Japan, which is leading in this field with innovative hybrid structures and technologies. This would be useful for not only students but also structural engineers in the world.
