The author of Outcomes, Perspectives Upper Intermediate
Andrew Walkley is co-author of National Geographic Learning’s adult series Outcomes and Upper-Intermediate Perspectives – part of NGL’s secondary course featuring TED talks. He blogs and provides free classroom material each week on lexicallab.com and is a director and trainer on the Lexical Lab Summer School held each year in London.

In this talk, I will be exploring the current uniformity of much Beginner-level material and explaining why this belies the realities of many low-level classes. I will then unpack the underlying dogma revealed by this state of affairs and consider its impact on teaching and learning. Based on classroom experience and my own teaching and writing, I will move on to suggest some alternative directions we could take and how these are relevant to higher levels too. Alex Warren
Alex is a DELTA trained teacher trainer with over 15 years’ experience of working in ELT as a teacher, academic director and teacher trainer. Prior to his experiences in ELT, Alex worked as a journalist before a chance encounter in the Indonesian jungle began him on the path which has led him to working with National Geographic Learning. A firm believer in a communicative approach to language learning and student-centred learning, Alex enjoys working with innovative, thought-provoking materials and presenting on a wide range of ELT-related topics, all the while driven by his passion for developing teachers on a global scale and helping them to reach their true potential.

There are a great many number of principles to consider when maximising vocabulary learning: the need to give it deliberate attention; the need to show how words do not exist in isolation, but in partnerships and the need for learners to work out meaning for themselves and to take ownership of newly learnt vocabulary. Using examples from National Geographic Learning’s Outcomes series, in this session we'll explore these different principles to help speed up vocabulary learning and develop greater language awareness.
