Re-organisation of IABSE Technical Activities

September 20, 2017, the Permanent Committee approved the changes to the IABSE By-Laws which will affect the structure of IABSE’s Technical Committee (TC). Newly elected TC Chair
Prof. Daia Zwicky, Switzerland will take over the implementation of the new changes and will try to finalise the new TC structure at its Spring meeting next year in Zurich.

The above organigram, shows the new TC structure. Some of the current Working Commissions (WC) and Working Groups (WG) will be converted into Task Groups (TG) and will report under a Commission according to their respective topic. All Commissions and Boards including OPAC and OStrAC will be governed by the Technical Committee to provide coherence and quality.

The IABSE Conference Guimarães 2019 will be held from March
27-29, 2019, in Guimarães, Portugal. This Conference is organised by the Portuguese Group of IABSE (Associação Portuguesa de Engenharia de Estruturas - APEE) in co-operation with the Institute for Sustainability and Innovation in Structural Engineering (ISISE), and the University of Minho, Portugal.

The Objectives of this Conference are to:

  • Place the topic of Sustainability of the Built Environment in an International Discussion Forum
  • Offer a worldwide discussion in risk assessment and infrastructure asset management with a share of knowledge from different stakeholders
  • Discuss Performance and Costs of built environment assets, with a focus on ‘Zero Maintenance’
  • Provide the adaptation of Young Engineers to the topics of Risk, Construction, Quality, Resilience and management.

Participants wishing to present a paper are invited to submit an abstract (200-300 words), related to the Themes and Topics of the Symposium by using the template available at the online submission platform available on the conference webpage.

The Liaison Committee met on Nov. 7, 2017

The annual Liaison Committee (LC) meeting took place this year at the IABSE Secretariat in ETH Zurich Hönggerberg under the Chairmanship of IABSE Executive Director, Chep Uytiepo.

The meeting was very productive involving sharing of each member association activities and new ideas on how to tackle the challenges facing the future of member associations. In addition, there are plans to improve synergy between associations in the future.

Members of IABSE are invited to propose nominations for the IABSE Awards by contacting the Chair of their National Group, Country Representative or directly to IABSE Secretariat. The Chairs will submit their proposals to IABSE Secretariat by the following dates:

Chile - IABSE welcomes the Chilean Group founded on Oct. 17, 2017 in Santiago. Members in Chile met for the first time to attend their Founding meeting and elected as Chair Matías A. Valenzuela.
