Sustainability in the Built Environment – the Tongji Consensus
Immediately after the recent ICASP13 conference in Seoul, Ton Vrouwenvelder, Jianbing Chen, Jie Li, Yongbo Peng and Michael Fabre organised a small workshop at Tongji University. The objective of this workshop was to initiate the development of a consensus statement among experts and professionals in the structural engineering community regarding the need for prompt and target actions to ensure sustainable developments in the built environment. And to direct the attention of politicians, industry leaders and societal decision makers in general, on the critical importance of the built environment for sustainable developments at global and local scales. It is also to direct their focus on how to proceed in ensuring that the built environment of the future is sustainable, resilient and adequately safe.
The workshop – with the participation of about 25 professors – mostly representing different universities across China – was both interesting and very fruitful. At the end of the workshop – and in the weeks following – participants jointly formulated and edited the Tongji Consensus. As next steps, participants hope to be able to gather the support of the Tongji Consensus, first from international and national engineering associations but later also from industries, public authorities, pre-normative and normative expert groups, regulating bodies and agencies as well as individual professionals within the structural engineering and construction sector.

Collective Member Maurer (News): Guided cross-tie: the first absolutely earthquake-proof railroad bridge expansion joint
Mexico City/Munich. The railroad line Toluca–Mexico City is scheduled to become operational early in 2021. The special feature is the MAURER seismic protection system for two long viaducts. For this purpose, so-called guided cross-ties, the first absolutely earthquake-proof railroad bridge expansion joints, are installed at the ends of the individual bridge sections. Together with a complex system consisting of bearings, dampers and elastomeric spring isolators they ensure structural stability, function and safety for various load cases: from braking and acceleration forces in normal operation to the Maximum Considered Earthquake (MCE). The new intercity line has a length of 57.7 km and is to connect Toluca with Mexico City from early 2021. The daily passenger estimate is about 230,000 to 300,000. The investment volume amounts to 2.5 bn US$.
