IABSE Spring Conference is around the Corner..

The Scientific Committee is now finalising the technical programme, which is expected to be available online in March.

At this IABSE Conference, participants from over 35 countries will discuss large scale infrastructure projects, engineering innovations for rapid urbanisation, achieving a low carbon footprint, harmonising new and old, and the future of aesthetic design.

Complimentary Technical Tours will be offered to three construction sites. Early registration is recommended, as spaces are limited and on first come first serve basis. On the programme are:

- KVMRT SSP Line Tunnelling Works
- KVLRT Line 3 Casting Yard
- Merdeka PNB 118.

IABSE Symposium Nantes 2018 is listed on the Calendar of the 2018 European Year of Civil Engineers, an initiative by the European Council of Civil Engineers (ECCE) to celebrate Civil Engineering across Europe. The goals of the 2018 EYCE are to:

  • Reinforce the fundamental role of civil engineers in society in improving the standard of human life.
  • Make the case for the prestige of the civil engineering profession in the community of European countries.
  • Stress the pivotal role that civil engineers will play in addressing the challenges that will face society in the future.

As part of this celebration, the ECCE is providing FREE of charge the two ECCE book editions "Civil Engineering Heritage in Europe" and "Footbridges - Small is beautiful" in electronic format.

Call for Papers and Proposals for Special Sessions

Deadline coming up: Participants wishing to present a paper are invited to submit an abstract online by February 28, 2018, relating to the Themes and Topics.

Proposals for Special Sessions: The theme of a Special Session should be in alignment with the Themes and Topics of the Symposium. However, Special Session Proposals with significant contribution to the objectives of IABSE will be considered. See the accepted proposals for Special Sessions here..

Brazil - Associaçao Brasileira de Enghenaria e Consultoria Estrutural (ABECE) representing the Brazilian Group of IABSE, is organising ‘X CBPE’ their 10th Congress on Bridges and Structures in Rio de Janeiro, from Mai 9-11, 2018. More than 300 participants are expected to attend. Topics will be: Standardisation, experimentation, analysis and design of reinforced and pre-stressed concrete structures, metal, wood, masonry and advanced materials.

The Netherlands - On January 30, IABSE NL organised the successful seminar ‘Connect’. The purpose of this seminar was to provide Dutch engineers from academia and practice the latest knowledge about connections, and to connect with each other. Various topics were covered, like glueing of steel structures, 3D printed connections in steel, 3D printing in concrete, demountable connections in steel, and earthquake proof connections. The fully booked seminar (100 participants) was hosted by Movares in Utrecht. Presentations can be downloaded here (in Dutch).

Prof. Ho-Kyung Kim

South Korea – IABSE is pleased to welcome Prof. Ho-Kyung Kim from Seoul National University as the new Chair of the Korean Group of IABSE and is looking forward to future cooperation. Many thanks are expressed to Prof. Hyun Moo Koh, who served seven years in this position, he continues his engaged work at IABSE as Vice President on the Executive Board.

‘Nouvelle Route du Littoral’ Construction of

France - In November 2017, AFGC organised a week-long study journey for about sixty of its members to visit the construction site of the ‘Nouvelle Route du Littoral’ in La Reunion Island. The region has decided to shift the current road between St-Denis and La Possession by building a new road on the sea to prevent the stone blocks that are regularly detaching from the big cliffs, from falling down on the road. HS2 Ltd has revealed an outline concept for the Colne Valley viaduct, which will help inform development of its final design and form the basis for wider discussions with local communities. The concept was developed by independent specialists Knight Architects, working with Atkins, in consultation with the Colne Valley Regional Park Panel, and the HS2 Independent Design Panel, consisting of architects, designers and experts in sustainability. IHI Infrastructure Systems
Japanese civil engineering group IHI has won a contract to build part of what will be India's longest sea bridge, linking central Mumbai to new urban developments and helping ease traffic woes in the area. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has chosen a consortium of subsidiary IHI Infrastructure Systems and local contractor Larsen & Toubro to build the first 10km section of the 22km Mumbai Trans Harbor Link. This quadrennial event will be held in Quebec City, Canada July 31- August 3 2018 and is organised by the Canadian Society of Civil Engineers (CSCE). ECCS - Save the date for the ‘Advanced Practical Training on Cold Formed Steel Structures’ on March 22 and April 26, 2018, in Brussels. Obituary - Professor Juan José Arenas, 2017 IABSE International Award of Merit in Structural Engineering Awardee, passed away in Santander (Spain) on the November 9, 2017. Arenas was a renowned Spanish bridge engineer, with over 50 years of professional experience in the design of bridge structures. Read the full text here.
