IABSE Guangzhou Conference 2016

The IABSE Conference Guangzhou was held from May 8-11, 2016, and was organised by the Chinese Group of IABSE in association with Tongji University, Guangzhou University, Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge Authority and Guangdong Provincial Chang Da Highway Engineering Co. Ltd. It linked national and international activities in a single conference and attracted 1110 participants from 29 countries and areas. The top five participating countries besides China were Indonesia, Germany, Japan, and Switzerland! The proceedings (ePDF) can now be purchased at the online shop. Read the report..


YEC Hamburg 2016 – Proceedings available online

The Young Engineers Colloquium Hamburg 2016 which was jointly organised by the German and the Danish Groups of IABSE offered attendees with an overview of current research topics, as well as challenging construction projects. Count Down for Opening of Gotthard Base Tunnel

At 57 kilometres, the Gotthard Base Tunnel (GBT) is the longest railway tunnel in the world and represents the centrepiece of the New Rail Link through the Alps (NRLA). On June 1, 2016, 17 years after the first blast in the main shaft, the world’s longest railway tunnel will be ceremonially opened. The final preparations for the opening of the Tunnel and for the festivities under the title of ‘Gottardo 2016’ are in progress. On May 10, 2016, the organisers - Swiss Federal Office of Transport (FOT), Swiss Federal Railways and AlpTransit Gotthard Ltd (ATG) - invited to an on-site preview. Read more..

Zdeněk Bažant, USA – has been presented with the Austrian Cross of Honour for Science an Art of the 1st Class. He received the award on May 11, 2016, from the President of Austria at the Hofburg in Vienna. Professor Bažant is the 78 person and the first engineer to receive this honour since its inception in 1960. He is best known for his discovery of the scaling law for the energetic size effect in quasibrittle structural failure. Read more..
